Tomtom app for iphone – first impressions

Yesterday I grabbed a copy of the tomtom gps app fron the iTunes store to test with my iPhone. I’ve been a long time tomtom gps user and currently have a tomtom go in the car. The promise of similar functionality on the iPhone coupled with the inteligent route functionality to find the shortest & fastest route made this app a must for my iPhone.

First impressions of the app Are mixed. The gps signal isn’t great on the iPhone, and the app isn’t as responsive or fast when compared with the tontom go. However the functionality is complete and the app has much more functionality than the recently updated tomtom go software.

iPhone Youtube Slow – Fixed

The iPhone 3G is an indispensable gadget - but will benefit from Firmware revisions!

The iPhone 3G is an indispensable gadget - but will benefit from Firmware revisions!

Well I’ve been having trouble with youTube on my iPhone since I bought it. Videos where taking forever to buffer and where really unwatchable. I have a Netgear wgr614 v6 Wireless router which was set to b & g for wireless. After endless testing and troubleshooting I have found that if I force the router into B only mode, although I take a wireless performance hit, youtube on the iPhone is perfect. I really don’t know why this is, maybe apple tried to tweak their 802.11g protocols too much for some routers. Anyways a quick fix that works for me. If your youtube on the iPhone is going slow over wireless and you need a fix, try setting your router to Wireless B only.

I will keep you updated if I find out anything else.

iPhone App of the week 8th January 2009 – Free RSS Reader

An Excellent free RSS reader, with even more features available in the paid version!

An Excellent free RSS reader, with even more features available in the paid version!

I recently searched the app store for a better way to browse RSS. Up until now I have been using the iPhone friendly Bloglines site with safari, and it has been working OK, however I would much prefer a way to download all my RSS feeds and be notified when feeds are updated. The App I found was Free RSS Reader.

Free RSS has a really intuitive interface, and adding feeds is a breeze. Simply browse to the blog or website containing the feed you wish to subscribe to (within the software itself) and Free RSS Reader detects the feed automatically. Then its a matter of selecting the feed and format you want to subscribe to on said page (RSS, Atom etc) and click the add button.

Free RSS Reader displays the articles from your feed in an iPhone friendly way, and by clicking the refresh button on Free RSS REader, all your feeds are refreshed and updated. Also an entry is marked as read when you have finished with it, allowing you to keep upto date with all your favourite RSS feeds in an organised manner.

iPhone blogging

Well this is a first. I’m sat on my sofa blogging using my new best friend, which happens to be my iPhone 3g. It’s an amazing piece of kit which after 3 weeks I can’t imagine living without. The app store has some great software including this wordpress app aswell as the eBay and facebook apps. The wireless email is also perfect foe grabbing our business IMAP mail and also gmail. I’ll post a more in depth post when I’m sat at my iBook later.
